Hans Niemann’s lawsuit against Magnus Carlsen dismissed

Do you still remember the Carlsen – Niemann controversy that started in September 2022? In our last blog article we informed you about Niemann’s decision to sue Carlsen.

In the $100 million lawsuit filed in October last year, Hans Niemann alleged that Magnus Carlsen falsely accused him of cheating after he defeated Carlsen at the Sinquefield Cup in St. Louis, Missouri. Niemann also alleged that the former World Champion paid a friend $328 to shout “Cheater Hans” from the stands at the closing ceremony of a tournament, but Carlsen has not responded to this allegation. Hans Niemann also accused Hikaru Nakamura, Chess.com, the Play Magnus Group, and Daniel Rensch and claimed he lost out on millions of dollars because of being blacklisted from a lot of important tournaments.

Magnus Carlsen did what he always does, also in chess, fought back. His lawyers motioned to dismiss the case in December and said Niemann did nothing to disprove the cheating allegations.

Unfortunately for Niemann, he got checkmated after District Court Judge Audrey Fleissig rejected his claims that Carlsen and Chess.com broke antitrust laws by together deciding to exclude him from profitable tournaments. Fleissig rejected the accusations with prejudice, meaning Niemann cannot file again about antitrust violation allegations. Judge Fleissig also found she did not have jurisdiction over Niemann’s state law claims for defamation.

For now, the chaos is over, but we can surely expect a continuation after Niemann’s lawyers said that the judge’s decision had no impact on their ability to pursue the defamation claims in state court, which they now plan to do.
