29th International Chess Open Graz
The annual Chess Open Graz, held from the 18th to the 24th of February, broke the participation record with almost 370 participants, which came from 37 nations. I took part in this tournament, but unfortunately, after quite poor results, I quit the tournament after five rounds. Despite the bad chess results, I enjoyed the friendly atmosphere of the town and also visited some beautiful places in Graz, as well I got the motivation to train more and get better.
The 9-round swiss system has a time control of 90 minutes + 30 seconds from the first move. The players fought in three groups, according to their ratings.
The main tournament had a rating limit of a minimum of 2000 points, and the tournament was quite strong. From the beginning, the Italian Grandmaster, Luca Moroni, took the lead with a perfect score after five rounds, which was followed by a draw with Bartosz Socko. Unfortunately, in the seventh round, the tournament changed the leader when Moroni lost to Gupta. We have previously interviewed Luca, which you can read here.
Gupta Abhijeet unexpectedly lost in the second round, but after that, he destroyed all his following opponents and took first place with 8 points – one point ahead of Potsch Hagen and Blohberger Felix. Please click here for the full results.
The B section was for players over 1700 and under 2000 rating. My compatriot, Simona Bochnickova, became the winner. She only allowed one draw and made an amazing 8,5 points. Congratulations to her!
The tournament was really nice and I hope to go back and play the next year, hopefully with much better results 🙂
