Maia Chess Open

At the end of the holidays, I played my last summer tournament in Portugal, the Maia Chess Open. From the 25th of August to the 2nd of September, a small town named Maia gave home to the event.

The tournament format was a nine-round Swiss system with a standard time control. 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game, plus 30 seconds increment from move number one. It was a big tournament with 312 players from 36 countries, and 76 of them were titled players.

The strength of the tournament was unquestionable, as my initial seed was at the 97th place of the starting list. I improved it a little by finishing in 90th place with 5 points. I had some fighting games when I had to prove that I could win the game, but in the end, I won all the games against less-rated opponents. On the other hand, I lost all the games against stronger opponents, and after a really long time, I had a tournament without a single draw.

As there were 13 grandmasters, the strength of the top player was balanced, and the winner was not decided till the very last moment. Before the final round, you could feel the tension between the top players. 5 leading players had the same number of points, 6,5 from 8 games, so the top 3 places were up for grabs.

In the end, luck stood on the side of GM Mikhalevski Victor, a 51-year-old player from Israel. He defeated the first-ranked player of the tournament, GM Liang Awonder. It was a tough game for both because Mikhalevski decided to play coffee house chess and allowed many combinations and complications. But after all, it brought him the whole point.

The second place was secured by GM Stremavicius Titas. He made a draw in the last round and scored 7 points. He had the best tie break out of 7 other players with the same points. The third place was taken by GM Halkias Stelos.

I had a wonderful time playing this tournament. The playing conditions were excellent, and the playing hall was nice and spacious. A Big bonus was the 36 online boards. The organizer also made 2 other tournaments. A blitz tournament on a cruise and a Queen’s blitz tournament to help women in chess. Also, thanks to the excellent location of the event, where you could visit many sights in Porto or chill on the beach. There was definitely no time to get bored!
