Hungarian Rapid Chess Championship 2023
After the tournament in Budapest, I stayed in Hungary for another event. Just two hours from Budapest, in the city of Ajka, there was the Hungarian Rapid Chess Championship. The tournament was held from the 21st to the 23rd of July. The system was a 13-round Swiss and the time control was 15 minutes plus 10 seconds per each move.
As the prize fund was high, €20,500, it lured some of the top world players to play. GM Svidler Peter, GM Maghsoodloo Parham, GM Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu or GM van Foreest Jorden for example were all present. There were 297 players, 120 of them titled, and 38 grandmasters.
I started the tournament raked in 171st place and I finished with a slight improvement in 154th place. I scored 6,5/13 points and gained 30 points of rating. The most precious win for me was when I defeated an international master after he miscalculated in the endgame.
The fight for first place was very tense, as the first 27 players had a rating of over 2500 and anyone could win. However, after 13 very hard and stressful rounds, GM Svidler Peter became the winner with 1 point ahead of everyone! Despite not having a good start, 3,5 points out of 5, he made a perfect comeback and scored amazing 7,5 points out of 8 rounds, finishing the tournament with 11 points.
In second place was GM Maghsoodloo Parham, with 10 points. He was leading the tournament from the 8th till the 12th round, but in the last game, he lost against GM Predke and also lost first place.
GM Sjugirov Sanan, who scored 10 points, took third place. He was also the only player who won against Svidler.
Personally, it was a great experience. I saw some top players and got a chance to play with some of them. I also liked the schedule of the tournament, as we were playing only in the afternoon, so in the morning we got some free time and a chance to hang out with friends or just chill, thanks to which the players weren’t tired and could show their best. Hope I can come back next year!
