Tan Zhongyi won the Pool B of Women’s Candidates
The Pool B of the Women’s Candidates took place in Khiva, Uzbekistan, from 28th November to 11th December, with the same system as it was in Pool A.
The two quarterfinals were between GM Aleksandra Goryachkina (FIDE) against GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (FIDE) and GM Kateryna Lagno (FIDE) against GM Zhongyi Tan (CHINA).
The match between Goryachkina and Kosteniuk started with two draws in the first two rounds. In the third round, Goryachkina was black and took advantage. She won after an imprecise defence of the endgame by Kosteniuk. The fourth game ended up being a draw, which meant that Goryachkina was going to the semifinals.
The other quarterfinal between Lagno and Tan was much tenser. After all the standard games ended up with an indecisive result, they had to play another four rapid games to define the winner. In the first rapid game, Tan put Lagno under pressure. It led to Lagno making a mistake in time trouble and Tan winning the game. In the other games, Lagno could not push enough. Tan qualified for the semifinals.
The semifinals looked very indecisive at the start, and the first three games resulted in draws. It looked like the match would have to be decided in the rapid games. However, in the last standard game, Goryachkina blundered a piece and Tan won the game, by which she qualified for the finals. She will face GM Lei Tingjie (the winner of Pool A) in the final. It shall comprise a 6-game match between them in the first quarter of 2023. The winner of the match is going to challenge current Women’s World Chess Champion Ju Wenjun, for her title.
