Vigevano Chess Tournament
Last week I traveled to Italy to attend the Vigevano Chess Tournament, a U20 tournament, which was played from the 2nd to the 4th of June in the city of Vigevano. The playing hall was located inside the Castle of Vigevano, which gave it a majestic atmosphere and it was one of the most interesting places I have ever played in.
The 7-round swiss-system had a time control of 60 minutes per game plus 30 seconds after each move. The back-to-back triple round on the 2nd and 3rd day of the tournament was a tiring experience for all of us.
This year the tournament achieved a record number of participants, 133 players from 11 countries. I was a part of the Slovak representatives, with a total of 10 Slovak players playing in the tournament. We were the second-largest federation in the tournament, right after Italy.
The first two rounds started well for me. I won both games with lower-rated opponents. In the third round, I played against an FM on the third board. Unfortunately, after having some pleasant position with white, I blundered a tactic and lost the game. The fourth game went terribly for me after I blundered into a completely winning position and lost a lot of rating points. On the last day of the tournament, I scored 2,5 points from the 3 games, by winning the first two games and drawing the last one.
I placed number 30 with 4,5 points and won the prize for the third best woman of the tournament. You can check the results here.
The tournament was won by Junior Domingos, a Fide Master from Angola. He scored an amazing 6,5 points, only losing half a point in the 4th game against FM Rybka Simon, who placed second with 6 points. The third place was taken by FM Zetocha Adrian with 6 points, but a worse tiebreak than Rybka.
Even though the tournament didn’t go well for me, I really appreciated the friendly way the tournament was made. A beautiful playing hall and also the program ensured by the organizer team. Such as the possibility of playing blitz games between the tournament rounds with GM Jergus Pechac or watching the commentary of the online games on Twitch. And of course, the best part of all was the Italian food!
