Aronian leads the WR Chess Masters 2023 after 4 rounds
Top grandmasters fight for the tournament victory in Dusseldorf, Germany from 16 to 25 February.
The time control of the WR Chess Masters is very uncommon. Players have 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 60 minutes for the next 20 moves. Then they get 15 more minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move that starts from move 61. The prize pool is 130,000 euros.
The tournament brings together 10 of the strongest players in the world:

- GM Levon Aronian
- GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov
- GM Jan-Krzysztof Duda
- GM Gukesh D
- GM Praggnanandhaa R

In round 4, after a long fight, all games ended in draws. Giri Anish was closest to winning his game against Esipenko, but could not convert the advantage from the opening to have a whole point.
The leader – Levon Aronian is playing very impressive chess so far. He started the tournament with a win in a game full of traps against Praggnanandhaa. In round 3, Aronian destroyed his younger opponent Abdusattorov in the Sicilian Dragon. After the game, Levon noted: “it’s a good idea to play openings that people forgot”. The problem for Abdusattorov was that Levon had not forgotten the Dragon at all. The game collapsed on move 14.
After today’s draw, Levon Aronian is the leader of the tournament with 3 points. Here are the current standings:
