European Chess Club Cup 2022

Published by Lucia Ševčíková on

The 37th European Chess Club Cup and the 26th European Women’s Club Cup were from 2nd to 10th October in Mayrhofen, Austria. For the seven-round tournament, the teams in the open needed six players + two reserves, all of whom had to be members of the club or if not, the team had to pay a high license fee for him. The women’s team comprised four players plus one reserve player.

In the end, 87 teams took part (70 in the open section and only 17 women’s section) and the event broke the participation record.

The prize list had consisted in total of 40 000 euros – 25 000 for the open section and 15 000 for the women’s section. As the expenses for a team in the woman’s section are higher than the first place and the national federations don’t fund the women’s section team, the lack of participation is understandable. The ECCC should be the top club event of the year, but it needs a new format or a serious increase of prizes if they want a sustainable prestigious tournament.
