Impressive Levon Aronian wins the WR Chess Masters 2023

Levon Aronian becomes the winner of WR Chess Masters after scoring a wonderful 3/3 in the Playoffs!

Fighting for the tournament victory is over in Dusseldorf, Germany. You can read the course of the first 4 rounds in our previous article here.

After players enjoyed their free day, they came back to fight in round 5, where Aronian and Keymer won their games with white pieces. In round 6, all players drew their games and Aronian was the sole leader with 4,5 points. In round 7, however, Ian Nepomniachtchi took his chance to make it harder for Aronian. Nepomniachtchi decided not to repeat the moves in the middle game, but launched an attack and slowly created space that got him a game full of creative ideas.

In round 7, a very fun and unusual position happened in a game between Abdusattorov and Duda. On move 10, after a Russian Modern Attack was played, the position looked like this.

Both players were well prepared and knew that the position after 10. Qc4 was equal. The game ended in a draw.

Round 8 was successful for Keymer, who went from a better position to win the game against So. Because of that, Keymer was fighting for the third place in the last round. Before the last round, Aronian and Gukesh shared first place with 5 points, right ahead of Nepomniachtchi with 4,5 points.

In round 9, Aronian made a quick draw with Gukesh and was hoping for tie-breaks. But also Nepomniachtchi got in the way and outplayed Keymer, who made a very unfortunate mistake on move 59. After that, there was a 3-way tie for first place.

Here are the standings after the final round. Aronian, Gukesh and Nepomniachtchi went to the Playoffs to fight for the first place.

So the Playoffs were a three-way battle. 10-minute games with a 2-second increment were played. In the first tie-break game, Aronian defeated Gukesh and in the second he won against Nepomniachtchi. Gukesh won the third Playoff game and the final tie-break between Aronian and Gukesh decided Aronian was the winner.

After winning the WR Chess Masters 2023, Aronian was very satisfied with his result: “I am very, very happy. It’s a great thing to win tournaments, very enjoyable. I recommend it.”

So Levon Aronian held the lead from round 4 and won the tournament convincingly in the Playoffs. Gukesh and Nepomniachtchi shared the second place.
