Peter Svidler wins the TePe Sigeman & Co

GM Peter Svidler showed up to compete in the 28th edition of the Tepe Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament, after not competing more than a year and a half. The time control of the tournament was 90 minutes for 40 moves + 30 minutes for the remaining moves with 30 seconds increment for each move, starting from the first move. To make it more interesting, draws were not allowed until move 40.

Boris Gelfand and Peter Svidler were the oldest to play in the tournament between young talents. Svidler played a classical-rated game for the last time in October 2021, achieving a score of 5½ out of 11 at the Grand Swiss on the Isle of Man. Now he has won the TePe Sigeman & Co tournament with a little help from Gelfand. Since the 4th round, Svidler was sharing the lead with Abhimanyu – 14 years old youngest grandmaster in the world. In the last round, Abhimanyu and Gelfand played a very intense endgame, where Abhimanyu made a mistake in move 121.

This tricky endgame is not easy to play. Even though Gelfand is a pawn-up, this position is a draw. Abhimanyu played and defended very well till this moment, where he played 121. Qd5. At first sight, it is not clear why Qd5 is a mistake. The game went: 121…Kh2 122. Qd2, Qc6 123. Kb8, Kh1 124. Qd1, g1=Q 125. Qh5, Qh2, and Abhimanyu resigned.
