Pieniny Chess Tournament 2023

From the 28th of April to the 1st of May, I took part in a Pieniny Chess Tournament. The tournament was played in a beautiful National Park in Pieniny in Slovakia. Mountains and nature surrounded us while playing our games. Another plus was the variety of free-time activities organized by the tournament staff members, such as hiking, renting a bike, or group rafting.

It was a seven-round tournament played by the Swiss system and only players under 2400 could have participated. The time control was 60 minutes + 30 seconds per each move for the entire game.

I started the tournament well, with 2 wins as I was playing with weaker players by rating. In the third round, I was paired with the first-ranked player of the tournament with white. This game started quite unpleasant for me because I blundered an exchange right after the opening. Fortunately for me, my opponent missed some opportunities to win, and I held a draw by a fortress in the endgame.

In the next round, I made a quick draw with a higher-rated player. The fifth round ended as a win for me by default as my opponent didn’t show up, so I had 4 points after 5 rounds.

This was followed by another quick draw in the sixth round with black. In the last round, I had white with the fourth-ranked player of the tournament. Unfortunately, I played the opening with some minor mistakes and allowed him to get an advantage. He handled the position with precision and turned it into a whole point.

Despite the loss in the last round, I finished the tournament with a good result, 4,5 points out of 7 and I ended in 11th place as a second woman and third U20 player of the tournament. Also gained some ratings.

The winner of the tournament became FM Zvarik Martin with 5,5 points. Valko Michal took second place and the third was Horvath Tomas, both with 5,5 points but a worse tiebreak than Zvarik. You can check the complete results here.

The atmosphere there was very friendly and I for sure want to play again the next year.
