Kosteniuk won the Women’s Grand Prix – Munich 2023

The second stage of the Women’s Grand Prix 2023 was played from the 1st to the 13th of February in Munich, Germany. The Women’s FIDE Grand Prix Series 2022-2023 comprises four tournaments:

1. – Astana, September 2022

2. – Munich, February 2023

3. – India, March 2023

4. – Bydgoszcz, May 2023.

It features 16 players, and each one of them will take part in three of four tournaments. They play each of these tournaments with twelve players round robin. The winner of the Women’s Grand Prix Series is a player who scores the most cumulative points earned in all three tournaments she played and the first two players will qualify for the FIDE Women Candidates Tournament 2023-24.

The total prize fund for each one of the four events is €80000, with another €80000 being distributed among the top 8 finishers in the overall standings for the Grand Prix series.

Kosteniuk took the lead by an amazing 4/4 and became clearly the leader of the tournament. After a perfect start, 4 draws followed and a win. At this moment, Kosteniuk (7/9) was in front of Koneru with a full point. In the 10th round, Koneru reached a winning position against Kosteniuk, but she blundered in time trouble and the game ended in a draw.

In the last round, Kosteniuk lost against Zhu Jiner, but it was still enough for her to win the tournament with 7,5/11 points. Koneru Humpy followed with 7/9 – she drew the last round. Dzagnidze Nana took third place with 6,5/9 points.

By this result, Alexandra Kosteniuk is leading in The Women’s Grand Prix Series with 250 points. Behind her is Zhu Jiner with 175 points and in third place is Kateryna Lagno with 160 points. Every tournament winner gets 160 points, the second got 130 points and the third place 110 points. The remaining points are reduced in steps of 10 from 90 for 4th to 10 for 12th place. If players ended up tied on points, points for those places are shared equally.
